Clashes broke out between Youth Congress workers and police in the city Wednesday during a protest rally by the organisation demanding immediate arrest of those involved in the cut money scam in West Bengal.
Police were deployed in large numbers, barricades were set up, water canons were kept ready on the B B Ganguly Street to stop the Youth Congress activists from reaching the Kolkata Police Lalbazar headquarters.
Though no prominent Congress leader was present in the rally, Youth Congress activists allegedly broke barricades overpowering police personnel near Phears Lane, near Lalbazar.
"Cut money" was allegedly taken by elected representatives of Trinamool Congress from beneficiaries of government schemes and the Congress has demanded that West Bengal government form an inquiry commission to probe it.
They were stopped by the police personnel in the next barricade well before the Kolkata Police headquarters.
Several Youth Congress activists have alleged lathicharge by the police which was dismissed by a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
There was no lathicharge today on any of the Youth Congress activists today during their rally. Our officers did a great job in controlling the situation. We have to arrest the Youth Congress activists and sent to the central lockup in Lalbazar, the officer said.
