A fourth standard student died after being allegedly attacked by two classmates at a government school in the district over a quarrel about using his geometry box, following which the duo have been booked on murder charge, police said.
Suriya (9), student of government elementary school in Kolikalnatham village in Tiruchengode taluk, suffered head injuries after being beaten up by the two students, also aged nine, on Monday following a quarrel over the use of his geometry box. He had vomitted on returning home, police said.
He was taken to a hospital in Erode and then rushed to the Mohan Kumaramangalam Government Hospital in Salem yesterday after his condition turned critical. However, Suriya died on the way, they said.
Initially, police had detained the students after booking them under IPC section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) but after Suriya's death, altered it to 302 (murder).
Considering their age, the two children were released on bail by the juvenile justice board today.
