Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today urged his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to ensure safe return of Odia tourists stranded in Darjeeling.
"Concerned of Odia families reportedly stranded in #DarjeelingUnrest. Request @HMOIndia & @MamataOfficial to intervene & arrange safe return," Patnaik tweeted as state Tourism Minister Ashok Panda took up the matter with his West Bengal counterpart.
Panda said that efforts were being made to evacuate the tourists from the troubled region. "I have spoken to West Bengal Tourism Minister in this regard," he said.
West Bengal Tourism Minister had assured to extend all support for safe return of tourists to Odisha, he added.
"He (Bengal minister) said that buses are leaving Darjeeling's Chowk Bazaar to Siliguri carrying tourists. From Siliguri, the passengers are being shifted to Kolkata. Steps are being taken for the safety of the tourists," Panda said.
The tourists who are in the trouble-hit Darjeeling have informed their families over phone that they are unable to come out of the hotels due to the activities of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters.
