CM presents cash prizes to TN C'wealth games medal winners

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami today presented cash prizes to sportspersons from the state who won medals in the recent Commonwealth Games in Australia.

He presented cheques for Rs one crore to each of table-tennis players A Sharath Kamal and G Sathiyan and Rs 50 lakh to weightlifter Sathishkumar Sivalingam (gold), an official release said.

Kamal and Sathiyan had won the gold in the men's team event and silver in the doubles. Besides, Kamal also landed the bronze in the singles section.

Another table-tennis player A Amalraj (team event gold) received a cheque for Rs 50 lakh while squash players Deepika Pallikal (silver) and Saurav Ghosal (silver) received Rs 60 lakh and Rs 30 lakh, respectively, it said.

The government gave away a total of Rs 54 lakh to the coaches of the players, it added.

The Indian contingent fetched a total of 66 medals, including 26 gold, in the games held in Gold Coast, Australia, from April 4 to 15, the release said.
