CM to inaugurate 8.6 km Airport-Chinnamalai service tomorrow

The 8.6 km-long Airport-Chinnamalai metro rail service here will be inaugurated by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa tomorrow, the state government said today.
Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Minister of State for Shipping and Roadways, Pon Radhakrishnan will be participating in the ceremony, it said.
Jayalalithaa will inaugurate the service and also six metro rail stations on the route through video conferencing, it added.
The first ever metro rail service in the city, the 10 km Alandur-Koyambedu stretch, was flagged off in June 2015 by Jayalalithaa.
The Chennai Metro Rail project involves two corridors.
According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), Corridor-1 starts from Washermanpet and ends at Chennai Airport, covering 23.085 km, of which 14.3 km is underground and 8.785 km elevated.
Corridor-II between Chennai Central and St. Thomas Mount (Parangimalai) covers 21.961 km. It is partly underground and partly elevated.
The project now also includes an extension from Washermanpet to Thiruvotriyur.
