With the ban on single-use plastics coming into effect from January 1, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami Thursday urged banks to offer loans to plastic manufacturing firms to enable them take up other business opportunities.
He said there was a need for use of non-plastic products among consumers as the ban on single use plastic came into force from January 1.
The Chief Minister was speaking at a function organised by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development here.
"I appeal to banks to offer loans to women's Self Help groups, currently engaged in producing alternative products for plastics.
Besides, giving loans to companies engaged in manufacturing plastics will help them take up other business opportunities", he said.
The AIADMK government had in June 2018 announced that it would ban the use of plastic items including non-biodegradable carry bags from January 1, 2019 to "gift a plastic-free state to future generations".
