The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) regional centre here will soon come out with a technology for breeding, seed production and farming of red snapper--fin fish.
The technologies for breeding, seed production and farming of red snapper would be unveiled in a month or two.
Red snapper, locally known as "vela meen" has a good market potential and also yields good price.
The Institute, which has already developed and standardised the technology for sea cage and saline farming of 'Cobia' and 'Silver Pompano', has now developed the technology for sea cage farming of red snapper, CMFRI scientist in-charge G Gopakumar said in a release.
He said CMFRI has decided to develop farming technologies for fin fish and shell fish, following a drop in their population.
Farming of fishes in the sea cages and coastal saline ponds is one of the options for additional seafood production.
CMFRI also plans to develop breeding technology for a dozen species of fishes and a couple of lobsters, Gopakumar added.
