The second of its class ICGS Samudra Paheredar, built at M/S ABG Shipyard Limited, Surat and will be based at Visakhapatnam, is specially designed to mitigate any marine oil spill in exclusive economic zone using state-of-the-art pollution response equipment on board.

The ship is also fitted with modern integrated platform and power management system which makes it unique for unmanned machinery operations.

It has a dynamic positioning system, wherein the ship can remain static without mooring or at anchor for offshore fire fighting and pollution control operations. The infra-red system on board strengthens its surveillance capabilities at night, a Defence Ministry release said.

It can also operate helicopters from its deck besides undertaking multifarious tasks such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and medical evacuation.

While addressing the coast guard personnel at Chennai port, Inspector General SP Sharma, Commander, Coast Guard Region (East) asked the personnel to be prepared to take on any challenges at sea.
