A fast patrol boat equipped with latest technology has joined the fleet at the coast guard station in Mandapam near Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, further boosting vigil in the coastal area.
"The boat C-412 has been built by infrastructure major Larsen and Toubro Ship builders and was commissioned last month at Porbander, Gujarat. The boat arrived at Mandapam today," a Coast Guard release said here tonight.
The 28-metre-long beat weighing 135 tonne can achieve a maximum speed of 45 knots, it said.
It would help the coast guard in strengthening its vigil in the maritime area surrounding the Indian subcontinent which was home to large amount of maritime traffic and fishing activity.
The boat, to be commanded by Assistant Commandant C R Singh with 11 personnel, is capable of undertaking various tasks including surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and rendering assistance to mariners and fisherfolk in distress at sea.
It would function under the Commander Coast Guard Eastern Region and would further bolster the prowess of Coast Guard in the area, the release added.
