Palanisamy, a cobbler by profession, was standing near a bakery when the lorry suddenly overturned and fell on him, burying him alive.
An earthmover was requisitioned to remove the gravel and extricate the body, they said.
Angered over the incident, a large number of residents in the area staged a protest, demanding a speed breaker at the spot to prevent any further accident. They also urged the authorities to remove a state run liquor outlet from the area.
