"The lowest temperature in the plain was recorded at 1 degree Celsius in Umaria district," meteorologist E R Chintalu, posted with Meteorological Centre here, told PTI.
He said while "extreme cold conditions" are prevailing in Shahdol division, a cold wave is being experienced in eastern part of the state.
While minimum temperatures of 4.6 and 4.8 degree Celsius were recorded in Gwalior and Jabalpur districts respectively, Bhopal and Indore shivered at 6 and 8 degree Celsius, the spokesperson said.
"Ground frost may occur at isolated places spread over Gwalior, Datia, Morena, Khajuraho, Tikamgarh, Rewa, Umaria and other places," the officer said.
The cold conditions are forcing people to stay indoors with roads getting deserted early in the night. At many places, bonfires are lit along the roadside to beat the cold.
