Cold temperatures envelop Kashmir valley

The minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar was minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, while Leh in frontier region of Ladakh was the coldest recorded place in the state with a low of minus 17.0 degrees Celsius, a spokesman of the MET department said.

Kargil also witnessed a dip in the night temperature, which settled at minus 14.4 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, was freezing at minus 8.0 degrees Celsius.

The famous ski resort of Gulmarg was the coldest place in the valley yesterday with a minimum of minus 10.8 Celsius.

However, the night temperature from the observatory in Gulmarg was awaited, the spokesman said.

He said the night temperature across the region is expected to fall further as the weather will remain mostly dry till December 27.

Bright, sunny and clear skies had marked the entry of 'Chillai Kalan' yesterday.
