Cold weather claims 9 lives in UP

Nine deaths were reported in different parts of Uttar Pradesh due to cold weather even as relatively warmer conditions persisted in several places of north India.
The national capital continued to experience an unusually warm spell this season with mercury remaining above the normal. In addition, the high humidity during the day caused much discomfort to the people in the city.
The maximum temperature was recorded two notches above the season's average at 27.5 degrees Celsius while the minimum settled at 10 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal, Met department officials said.
Humidity was recorded between 28 and 88 per cent.

Mercury dipped in many areas in Uttar Pradesh and moderate to dense fog shrouded vast swathes of the state.
Poor visibility due to dense fog caused several accidents killing three persons in Siddhartnagar district, and two each in Hardoi and Lakhimpur Kheri districts, officials said.

An elderly man died of cold at Lauhrani in Siddhartnagar district yesterday, while another died near Shastri Chowk in Basti district, they said.
MeT officials said dense fog occurred at most places over eastern Uttar Pradesh while isolated places in western region were covered by moderate fog.
Muzaffarnagar recorded the state's lowest temperature at 5.5 degrees Celsius, the MeT officials said.
