"The population and the needs of people has increased to great extent which has affected the environment," an official release quoted Murmu as saying.
Murmu was addressing a function organised by the Forest Management and Preservation committee at Chakulia, about 55 kilometres from here.
"Environment cannot be protected by only depending on the government or the forest committees, but a collective effort is needed to protect it," the governor said.
She said that human lives can only be protected by preserving the environment and urged the people to plant a tree.
