Women in Vadodara city of Gujarat celebrated the Raksha Bandhan festival by tying rakhis on the hands of the men in uniform who were the city's saviours during the floods two weeks ago.
At various police stations, women on Thursday tied rakhis on the hands of police personnel who had rescued stranded families from flooded localities on the banks of the river Vishwamitri.
Vadodara collector Shalini Agarwal, who is holding additional charge as municipal commissioner, and other women staff from her office tied rakhis to personnel of the National Disaster Response Force and Army.
Almost the entire city was flooded on July 31 and August 1 following an extremely heavy downpour.
More than a lakh people were evacuated to safer places.
Women carrying rakhis thronged various police stations on Thursday, said police commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlaut.
A woman thanked sub-inspector Govind Rathawa of Raopura police station who had saved her 45-day-old baby girl by carrying her to safety in a tub on his head through neck- deep water.
