A college teacher-in-charge was today beaten up allegedly by SFI activists which drew angry reaction from West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan who said that "the students who beat the teacher should be beaten up".
Police said the teacher-in-charge Manoranjan Naskar of Kalinagar College under Sandeshkhali p s in Basirhat in North 24 parganas district was beaten up allegedly by nearly 40 supporters of the SFI inside the college.
Naskar, who sustained injuries, was rushed to the nearby Primary Health Centre from where he was shifted to Basirhat hospital, police said.
The incident sparked off a clash between SFI and Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad supporters, sources said.
Five TMC supporters were injured, Food minister Jyotipriya Mullick, Trinamool observer for North 24-Parganas claimed.
Commenting on the incident the Governor said in Kolkata, "My take is students who beat him should be beaten up. Nobody has the right to beat a teacher".
Earlier, Narayanan had expressed displeasure over "indiscipline" in some universities in the state and exhorted the administration and student bodies to create a proper ambience.
"There has been a steady deterioration in the quality of discipline among students and to some extent among the faculty. This is severely impacting the delivery of quality education," the Governor had said at the convocation of Kalyani University on August 8.
