Columnist questioned for writing against "unregulated" mining

Mohrmen was summoned to the Laitumkhrah police station in Shillong city in the morning after supporters of the Deputy Chief Minister B M Lanong lodged an FIR against him for the write-up published by a leading local daily here.

"Mohrmen was questioned based on an FIR filed against him," East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police A R Mawthoh told PTI.

He said the columnist was let out after giving a statement.

Confirming the incident, Mohrmen said he was called to the police station to clarify on an FIR lodged against him.

"I was initially forced to sign a bond with the police," he said, adding that on the intervention of a senior officer and other colleagues from the media, he was let out after two hours.

Mohrmen had written a column against the Congress-led government in which he highlighted the delay of "mining policy" and the need for "managing and controlling mining activities in the state.

Lanong is a member of the UDP, the largest constituent of the Congress-led coalition government in Meghalaya.
