"Commercial generation from the first unit (unit 7) of 110 MW capacity of Bihar's own Barauni thermal power station started on November 4," state Energy minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav told PTI.
With generation starting from one unit of BTPS, the state's power generation capacity has increased to 330 MW from 220 MW, which comes from two units of 110 MW each at Muzaffarpur Thermal Power Station (MTPS), a joint venture firm of NTPC and Bihar State Power Holding Company Ltd with NTPC having 67 per cent of stake in the JV.
"Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been carrying out renovation and modernisation (R&M) of the two units of 110 MW at Barauni (in Begusaria district). After running the unit number 7 for 72 hours since November 1, the commercial generation of power from the unit was declared. The plant generated 113 MW of power during the 72 hours," BTPS General Manager Arun Kumar Sinha told PTI.
"Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has been informed about the commercial generation from the plant. We have also informed North and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited," Sinha said.

Bihar, which would get the entire 110 MW of power to its kitty, has been drawing between 3,500 MW to 3,700 MW since Durga Puja from all sources including 2,400-2,600 MW against the scheduled allocation of 2,942 MW from the central sector.
BTPS would be the first power plant, which is wholly owned by the state government.
Out of the two units located at Barauni for which R&M is being carried out, one unit was commissioned on December 1, 1984, which stopped generation in March 2012.
The other unit was made operational on March 30, 1985 and it stopped generation in August 2006.
