The revenue department has created a new post of Commissioner (Investigation-Customs) to deal with policy matters related to search, seizure, and arrests, among others.
The post was created during the recent re-organisation of Directorates and field formations, said a circular of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).
"The Commissioner (Investigation-Customs) shall be reporting to Member (Investigation) in the Board," it added.
The Office of the Commissioner (Investigation-Customs) is presently in the national capital.
"Policy matters relating to search, seizure, arrest, prosecution and compounding offences under the Customs Act, 1962...," is among the work allocated to the Office of Commissioner (Investigation-Customs).
The official has also been tasked for monitoring on behalf of Member (Investigation), the work of Directorate General of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), and Customs filed formation in respect of "important seizures and investigation cases" and "investigation into foreign asset cases".
Besides, the official would also deal with matters relating to cyber forensic laboratory, disposal of confiscated goods, and Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty.
CBIC has directed the officials concerned to refer all related matters to the Office of Commissioner (Investigation-Customs) from September 15 onwards.
