Committee on making Cinematograph Act robust submits report

An empowered committee set up to suggest means to make the Cinematograh Act robust today submitted it report to the government with recommendations on certification, portrayal of women and communal harmony.
The Empowered Committee, chaired by Justice (retd) Mukul Mudgal, was set up in February this year against the backdrop of Kamal Hasaan's 'Vishwaroopam' being banned by the Jayalalithaa-led Tamil Nadu government despite the Censor Board's clearance.
The committee submitted its report, along with a draft bill based on the recommendations to Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari here.
The panel revisited major areas of concern and has made recommendations on advisory panels and guidelines for certification.
It has also dealt with issues such as portrayal of women, obscenity and communal disharmony.
The panel also went into the problem of piracy and jurisdiction of the Appellate Tribunal.
The 8-member Committee also included actor Sharmila Tagore and poet Javed Akhtar.
