The CPI today alleged that communal forces have spread religious intolerance in the country during BJP-led NDA rule, endangering secularism.
"Communal and fascist forces have created an atmosphere of religious intolerance in the country under the patronage of BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre," CPI national secretary K Narayana told reporters here.
To defend the Constitution and strengthen the basic principles enshrined in the law of the land, the CPI would observe the Republic Day on January 26 as 'Save Constitution Day', he said.
Ever since BJP came to power at the Centre, these forces have been "spreading hatred" and putting secularism, a fundamental principle enshrined in the Constitution, in "jeopardy", Narayana alleged.
Accusing the Narendra Modi Government of "sabotaging" the Constitution, the CPI leader claimed that minorities and dalits are being "targeted, attacked and killed as an atmosphere of terror" is being unleashed in the country.
The situation is worse in states ruled by BJP, he claimed.

Hitting out at Modi, Narayana alleged that parliamentary democracy is being denigrated as attempts are being made to run the administration in a manner akin to presidential or prime ministerial form of Government.
On the other hand, people's mandate and democratic principles had been demolished by using Governors in states like Goa and Manipur, the CPI leader alleged.
However, the CPI is determined to launch a battle to defend the Constitution and strengthen the basic principles enshrined in the law of the land, said Narayana, who attended the executive and state council meeting of CPI's Odisha unit which concluded here today.
