A community based retirement home for veteran naval officer/widow members belonging to the Navy Foundation Kerala Charter (NFKC) has been opened at Thottuva, near here.
The retirement home, called NORHOMES, is a "very unique" welfare project which is likely to set a way for community based such facilities for senior citizens across the country.
The project, initiated by the NFKC, is a five storey complex catering for 55 veteran officer couples/widows to stay as a community with all facilities for comfort and care provided commonly.
The project costing Rs 12 crore has been entirely funded by the members themselves to cater for their needs in the changed social environment.
"This facility will be made available to the other needy veteran service officers/widows also," a release issued by the Navy said here today.
The project was inaugurated by the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, S P S Cheema on Saturday.
