Commuters had a harrowing time travelling in Lutyens' Delhi area today owing to traffic diversions enforced due to the Bar Council elections at Delhi High Court today.
According to a senior traffic police officer, vehicular traffic was affected at C-Hexagon, Zakir Hussain Marg and roads leading towards the High Court. Shershah Suri Marg was closed for vehicles, including those of advocates.
"Traffic was diverted from Madarsa, Ashram Chowk, Safdarjung and Moolchand due to the election. Commuters had to opt for alternate routes like Zakir Hussain Marg, Purana Qila Road, Subramanium Bharti Marg and C-Hexagon which caused congestion on these stretches," the officer said.
Since these roads experienced a heavy volume of traffic, it had a cascading effect on other stretches in Lutyens' Delhi.
A commuter, who was travelling from ITO to India Gate said, "Usually, it takes five to 10 minutes to drive from ITO to India Gate. But today, it took me an hour to cover the same distance. It was a nightmare."
