Maharashtra Government has decided to pay 50 per cent amount of mandal based compensation to farmers who have not enrolled in the Prime Minister's crop insurance scheme.
Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil said those farmers who lost their crop due to flooding and excess rainfall during June to October last year would get some financial compensation from state government.
"The decision will cover sizable number of farmers in the state, who due to some reasons could not participate in crop-insurance scheme," he said.
"As per the crop insurance scheme, a certain amount is financed for every mandal depending upon the severity of crop damage. Many farmers have a tendency not to participate in such crop insurance schemes but they face problems when crop gets damaged. In such situation, the state's decision could come as some relief to the farmers," the minister said.
He said the government has also issued instructions to the banks not to deduct loan instalment of farmers from such compensation amount, because the amount is given as a relief.
"If loan amount is deducted, then the farmer will not have any money," Patil said.
The minister has also ordered survey and spot visits of tur crops in the state due to cold wave in Vidarbha region.
"The district collectors concerned are asked to submit a report accordingly with the state government," Patil added.
