Raising the issue during Zero Hour Kanimozhi (DMK) said it is a matter of serious concern that this year 37,000 cases of dengue infection were reported, twice the figure of last year and 227 persons lost their lives - the highest during the last five years.
These figures were based on government data whereas the fact is a large number of cases are not reported, she said, demanding to know as to "why the government is not able to control the situation."
Claiming that the actual number of affected people was much large, she said Tamil Nadu was one of the worst-affected states with detection of 9,249 cases and 60 reported deaths.
As soon as she said Chennai city was overflowing with garbage leading to an increase in mosquitoes, AIADMK members V Maitreyan and A Elavarasan protested.
Kanimozhi's party colleague Vasanthi Stanley also raised the issue through a Special Mention demanding an immediate check on the increasing number of dengue cases in Tamil Nadu.
She demanded special thrust on containing dengue under National Vector-borne Disease Control Programme.
