A welfare programme undertaken by the Congress activists here to mark the birthday of the party president Sonia Gandhi today involved feeding of birds on the city hilltops.
During the "Seva, Kartyavya and Sacrifice" week, launched by the former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, about 1,000 women from city slums were given 'Sonia Gandhi Health Cards' with insurance cover of Rs one lakh and hospitalisation expenses of Rs 20,000, ex-MLC Mohan Joshi said today.
Joshi said he started SKS initiative in 2004 when Sonia Gandhi refused to take up the Prime Minster's post.
"Scattering of food grains on the city hilltops was taken up this year from ecological point of view as the hills around Pune are being rendered barren with tree-cutting in the wake of increasing construction activity," he added.
The Congress president, who turned 68 today, has decided not to celebrate her birthday in view of terror and Naxal attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and Chhattisgarh respectively.
