Congress today strongly condemned the lathi-charge on its leaders and workers in Lucknow protesting the implementation of the Food Security Act in Uttar Pradesh.
Congress workers had staged a protest outside the Chief Minister's secretariat and had announced gherao of Akhilesh Yadav, when police indulged in a brutal lathi-charge, injuring many of the leaders.
"We strongly condemn this act of the Akhilesh Yadav government, which claims to be with the poor but is not implementing the Food Security scheme in the state," Congress spokesperson Meem Afzal said.
He claimed that over 100 Congress leaders, including Congress General Secretary Madhusudan Mistry, were injured in the lathi-charge.
"The lathi-charge is highly condemnable. We will continue to agitate to force the Uttar Pradesh government in implementing the Food Security scheme, which has been passed by an act of Parliament," Afzal said.
Police had baton-charged Congress workers when they tried to forcefully enter the Uttar Pradesh assembly premises during their protest to press for speedy implementation of food security scheme in the state.
