A delegation of state Congress leaders today handed over a memorandum to the Prime Minister's Office in Delhi, seeking Modi's intervention, said Goa Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Sunil Kawthankar.
"When the country is facing a national crisis on account of Chennai floods, which has killed hundreds and rendered thousands homeless, and with the increased tension at the international border with Pakistan, the Goa State BJP leaders are organising a mega birthday celebration of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar in the presence of Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari," Kawthankar said in the memorandum.
"Despite an appeal to call off the extravagant birthday celebration and utilise money for the welfare of those who suffered due to Chennai floods, the state BJP leaders have arrogantly said they will go ahead with the celebration," the petition said.
The Congress said they wanted the PM to "intervene" and direct Parrikar and state BJP leaders to reconsider their decision of going ahead with the "grand" birthday celebration.

The Congress had alleged that the BJP-led coalition government in Goa was using the state machinery to collect Rs 10-15 crore which would be spent on the programme scheduled to be held at Gymkhana ground here on December 13.
However, the BJP had justified the move, saying the bash is in fact the "much-delayed" public felicitation of the former Chief Minister after he was elevated as Defence Minister.
