A Congress leader has demanded immediate rehabilitation of the slum dwellers in suburban Malad, whose shanties located along the railway lines had been removed by the Western Railway authorities.
V P Ramaiah, who is also the general secretary of slum cell of the city, in his letter written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, said that those living near the tracks in suburban Malad since the last 20 to 25 years were "displaced" and turned "homeless" after the action by railway authorities.
"I have written to a number of MPs and MLAs in this regard and everyone assured us to rehabilitate the unfortunate slum dwellers. However, railway officers have blocked the way of rehabilitation of these people," said Ramaiah.
He said he is hopeful that Fadnavis would look into the matter and help the slum-dwellers.
Ramaiah has also sent the copies of the letter to the General Manager of Western Railway and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of WR of Mumbai Division.
Ramaiah said there are almost 1,600 such displaced people who are "fit" to be a bonafide slum dwellers.
