Cong leaders condole demise of Kishori Amonkar

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul today condoled the passing away of renowned classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar, describing her as the doyen of Hindustani classical tradition.
Gandhi, in a statement, said that in her death the country has lost the most prominent exponent of Jaipur Gharana.
Extending her condolences to her family and admirers, the Congress chief said that "Kishori ji will continue to live amongst us through her vast repertoire of Khayal, Thumri and Bhajans".
Amonkar passed away in Mumbai last night after a brief illness. She was 84. She passed away at her home in central Mumbai last night, family sources said.
Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi said that Hindustani classical music has lost a legend.
"A rare and extraordinary talent, her voice will remain with us always," he said on twitter.
Born on April 10, 1932 here, Amonkar was recognised as one of the foremost singers in the Hindustani tradition and as an innovative exponent of the Jaipur gharana. A gharana is a community of musicians sharing a distinctive musical style.
