After 33 Congress MLAs came out in support of Amarinder Singh pitching for Sonia Gandhi as the top leader of Congress as against Rahul Gandhi, a party MP and three MLAs today hit back accusing him of doing an about turn after having sung paean of the Congress Vice President.
Ravneet Singh Bittu, one of the three party MPs in the state, and four party MLAs threw their weight behind PCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa, a known detractor of Amarinder, and criticised the former chief minister for his remarks that Sonia, and not party vice president Rahul, should continue to lead Congress as its head.
The four Congress MLAs are Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Surinder Dawar and Ajitinder Mofar besides Bajwa's MLA wife Charanjit Kaur.
Bittu and the four MLAs came said Amarinder had himself showered praises on Rahul when he had selected him as a chief ministerial candidate in 2012 Punjab assembly elections.
"He (Amarinder) would regret his current statement if he goes through the record of the past when he had praised the Congress vice president," they said.
People have not forgotten Amarinder's statements repeteadly terming Rahul as the "future of India", they said adding that "strangely he now appears to have taken a U-turn."
Bittu and others said that the 33 Congress MLAs, whose support Amarinder claims, may have differences with the style of functioning of Bajwa, but they are not at all against Rahul Gandhi's leadership.
Bittu and the four MLAs supported the leadership of Rahul Gandhi "under the patronage" of Sonia Gandhi.
Bittu advised Amarinder to "discipline himself and see that the image of the party is not spoilt by his utterances or actions" and questioned the "reprehensible intention" of Amarinder to "demolish" Rahul Gandhi at a time when he is to mobilise the masses against "anti-people" policies of Modi government with a farmers's rally in Delhi on April 19.
