About 200 Tamil Nadu Congress workers were today taken into custody here for attempting to show black flags to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his arrival at the venue of the National Handloom Day function.
Led by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President E V K S Elangovan and AICC Secretary Su Thirunavukkarasar, several party cadres, who assembled at the Rajarathinam Stadium, tried to stage a black flag protest and wave placards protesting the suspension of 25 Congress MPs in Parliament.
The supporters, who were raising slogans soon after the arrival of Modi, were taken into custody and kept in a hall for sometime, police said. However, they were released in the evening.
Talking to reporters, Elangovan said the protest was not targeted at Modi and was against the ruling BJP government for suspending Congress MPs from Parliament.
