Controversial Assam Congress MLA Rumi Nath's estranged second husband was arrested and remanded in three days police custody today on the charge of being involved with the alleged kingpin of a country-wide auto theft gang and arms dealer Anil Chauhan who was caught recently.
Jacky Zakir was arrested last night from his house in Badarpur in Karimganj district and brought to Guwahati where he was produced before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate who remanded him in three days police custody, police officials said.
Nath's Personal Security Officer (PSO) Debabrata Barpatra Gohain was also arrested here last night and remanded in three days police custody by the CJM.
During investigation, it came to the fore that Anil Chauhan, who is wanted in a number of cases in Delhi, Mumbai and other states, was issued Assembly car passes on the recommendation of the Congress MLA, they said.
The Assembly Secretariat had earlier issued a notice asking her to explain why she recommended issuance of car passes to Chauhan.
State Congress President Anjan Dutta has also issued a showcause notice to Nath for her alleged involvement with Chauhan.
The controversial MLA had married Zakir in 2012 by converting to Islam and without divorcing her first husband. She was allegedly assaulted by a mob at a Karimganj hotel in July 2012.
