Congress MLA Shankar Singha, who had switched over to ruling Trinamool Congress a few months back, has been appointed as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the West Bengal assembly.
"Shankar Singha has been appointed as the chairman of PAC of the state assembly," Speaker Biman Banerjee told PTI.
The PAC chairman is selected from the main opposition party.
On why Singha got the post even after joining TMC, Banerjee said, "Nobody has given me any intimation or any official communication saying that he has joined TMC. Officially he is still an MLA of Congress,".
Singha, who had won the 2016 assembly election as a Congress candidate, had switched over to TMC in June.
The decision has miffed opposition Congress and Left Front, who said that injustice has been meted out to opposition parties.
"Everybody knows that the position of PAC chairman goes to opposition parties. But here a person who has switched to TMC is being given that chair. This is injustice. We will not attend any of the PAC meetings convened by Singha," a senior Congress MLA said.
The post of PAC chairman fell vacant after Manas Bhunia, a Congress MLA who too had switched over to TMC last year, resigned as MLA to contest Rajya Sabha elections.
