Congress MP Partap Singh Bajwa Monday sought government jobs for family members of those who died in the Amritsar train accident.
In a letter written to Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Bajwa said the response of the state government needed to be proportionate to the magnitude of damage, caused by such a horrendous incident.
Nearly 60 people were killed on Friday eveningafter a crowd of Dussehra revellers that had spilled onto railway tracks while watching the burning of a Ravana effigy was run over by a train near Joda Phatak in Amritsar.
The state government's offer of Rs 5 lakh to the families of victims, and free treatment at all government and private hospitals has been very well received by people... However, I believe the state government can even further improve its response by providing one job each to the families of victims who have passed away," Bajwa said.
"Financial stability for the foreseeable future will allow the families to grieve in peace. A proactive step such as this will go a long way in beginning to heal the wounds that this accident has so violently opened up, wrote Bajwa, who is a Rajya Sabha member.
Our objective here should be to simply ensure the families know that the state government is here for them and will provide all help that is necessary to get through this unspeakable tragedy, he said.
