Congress today opposed "imposition" of any civil code and favoured the need for taking all stakeholders into confidence.
It also left to the Supreme Court to decide the ticklish matter of triple talaq while insisting that the party has always pitched for empowerment of women.
With the debate over Uniform Civil Code creating much controversy, Congress expressed itself against imposition of any code and advocated the need for taking all stakeholders into confidence.
With a volley of questions on the issue at the AICC briefing, party spokesperson Shobha Oza fell back upon B R Ambedkar's remarks on the matter to drive home the point that all stakeholders needed to be taken into confidence for any change.
"It is not proper if this does not happen," she said, adding the party goes by what the architect of the Constitution had said on the issue long back.
Besides, she said the Congress party believes in the concept of "unity in diversity".

"We have full faith in the Supreme Court," Oza said while replying to questions on triple talaq.
The Law Commission's decision to invite views on the contentious Uniform Civil Code drew criticism from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and other Muslim organisations which said they will boycott it and accused the Narendra Modi government of waging a "war" against the community.
As the Muslim outfits claimed a Uniform Civil Code will "kill" India's pluralism, right wing organisations like BJP and Shiv Sena, long-time votaries of a common code, strongly supported the government's decision, insisting it would bolster gender equality and end discrimination against women.
