Veteran Congress leader Somen Mitra today said the party requires an anti-Trinamool Congress secular, democratic "adjustment" but not "alliance" for next year's Assembly elections in West Bengal.
When asked whether the Congress would go into an alliance with the TMC or the Left parties in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state, the Congress leader said "We need an anti-TMC secular and democratic adjustment... We need adjustment, not alliance."
Mitra feared if an alliance was formed, the Left might "ditch" them while the TMC would "decimate" the Congress.
"There is a fear if we go with the Left... They may ditch us and if we go with the TMC they will decimate us," he said.
"In 2011 we formed an alliance with the TMC to oust the Left from power... Thus established the reign of TMC in the state... But in the last four years they (TMC) have failed to keep their promises and democracy has been brought down to policies surrounding personal interests," Mitra said.
He also criticised the law and order situation in the country and questioned why the culprits in the Kamduni rape case as well as the Kakdwip incident have not been punished.
"Criminality will be there in a society, but there must be action against that... In West Bengal that's not there... Is this democracy?" Mitra asked.
