A campaign was today launched by the Delhi unit of the Congress's women wing to educate girls and women from marginalised sections about maintaining personal hygiene during menstruation.
Women should not consider menstruation as a stigma and accept it as a natural phenomenon, president of Delhi Mahila Congress Sharmistha Mukherjee said.
Under the campaign, "Swachh Mahila Swasth Mahila", free sanitary napkins would be distributed. Workshops will also be held for educating young girls and women, she said.
Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit rued that the scheme of distributing free sanitary napkins to girls in government schools was shut down by the AAP government.
All India Mahila Congress president and MP Sushmita Dev launched the campaign.
"The BJP-led central government has imposed 12 per cent GST on sanitary napkins which is on the higher side," she said and added that nothing was done to bring down prices even after a meeting of Mahila Congress leaders with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
She said that a signature campaign has been launched in which over 50 lakh signatures have been collected in support of the demand to remove GST on sanitary napkins.
