Congress today said Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal should resign taking moral responsibility for the failure of police to control the turmoil in the state.
Party's Punjab unit chief Pratap Singh Bajwa said the government conceded police failure by removing state police chief Sumedh Singh Saini who, he claimed, was Sukhbir's personal choice.
"The Chief Minister and his deputy must resign taking moral responsibility. Sukhbir must also relinquish the post of SAD president as the issues involved are multi-layered," he said.
Bajwa in a statement said the "turmoil" in the state was a result of the failure of intelligence and investigating agencies to locate the missing holy book.
He said the police tried to frame some persons in false cases in the wake of protests "which was ridiculous" and termed as a "cold-blooded murder" the death of two Sikhs in police firing during anti-desecration protests at Faridkot.
Senior Congress leader Amarinder Singh said Saini's removal from the post of DGP was "long overdue and he should have been replaced long back".

He said while his (Saini's) removal was a welcome step, "the people of Punjab will not be satisfied till those behind the Kotkapura firing incident are not dismissed and charged with murder".
Amarinder in a separate statement hoped that the new DGP, Suresh Arora, will not "shield the guilty cops and restore public confidence in police functioning".
Meanwhile, People's Party of Punjab chief Manpreet Singh Badal asked Sukhbir to step down "after admitting police failure to contain the deteriorating situation in the state as is evident by replacement of Saini by Arora as the new police chief".
