Violence broke out on the campus of the district collector's office here today after Congress workers clashed with the police.
The incident occurred after the Congress activists, led by former minister Yadvendra Singh, submitted a memorandum to the collector demanding that the district be declared drought-hit in the wake of scanty rainfall this year.
Around 25 workers of the Congress were injured when police lobbed tear gas shells and cane-charged them.
District Collector Abhijeet Agrawal said the police resorted to cane charge in self defence after the Congress workers hurled stones, empty bottles, and sleepers at them.
"SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate) Aditya Singh was at the spot on the premises of the collectorate when the incident took place. However, the exact number of Congress workers injured in the incident is not known," Agrawal said.
He said eight police personnel were also injured in the scuffle.
However, Singh said 25 Congress workers were injured in the police action and were admitted to the district hospital.
Explaining the sequence of events, Agrawal said Congress workers suddenly turned violent after submitting the memorandum.
