The head post office here was today ransacked allegedly by Congress workers following its refusal to accept recruitment applications beyond the scheduled time, police said.
Congress workers smashed furniture and broke glasses when the post office closed the counter at 3 PM, as scheduled, Superintendent of Police Kunal Agarwal said.
Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury, who was holding a rally in a nearby area, reached the spot on getting the information that applicantions were refused. He met senior Post Master Bidhan Acharya to request him to reconsider the decision since many youths were waiting.
Chowdhury, also WPCC chief, told reporters that he was kept waiting for over one and half hours and a section of the staff misbehaved with him before he could meet Acharya.
However, the matter was resolved at the intervention of the Senior Superintendent of the Post Office which resumed accepting applications, which continued till late evening, a post office official said.
