Congress today demanded imposition of Presidents' rule in Punjab, saying that the law and order situation has collapsed in the state.
"President's rule must be imposed in Punjab," Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmad said.
"The Congress high command has deputed me and Partap Singh Bajwa, president of party's Punjab unit, to take stock of the situation...Regarding the demands of Sikhs over the alleged desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji," Ahmed said.
Asking Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and DGP S S Saini to take the responsibility of the incident, he said the episode could have been avoided had they acted in time and solved the case of the missing scripture.
The two youths killed in clashes with police in Faridkot could have been saved, he said.
Alleging that the intelligence set up in the state has virtually collapsed, he asked why was the warning given by some miscreants not taken seriously.
On Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal the "Nelson Mandela of India", Ahmed said, "Badal is not Nelson but Alibaba of Punjab."
"Everybody has a right to protest and it can be done peacefully," Bajwa said while terming police action as "insensitive and miscalculated".
