City Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam and Moneylife Foundation Trustee Sucheta Dalal today organised a 'Tweet morcha' here, to protest against unfair bank charges levied on customers.
Agitated customers, along with members of civil society and bank union members were present at a pre-decided venue in Mumbai from where they tweeted to the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister demanding that action be taken against the banks with the hashtags #TweetMorcha and #BankSeBachao.
"Instead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi fulfilling his promise of depositing Rs 15 lakh in every bank account, the condition today is such that banks are fleecing customers by levying unfair charges on transactions like cash withdrawals and deposits," Nirupam told reporters here.
He said that banks are indulging in "atrocious" means to make money by levying fees on customers if there is less than Rs 5,000 in banks, there are more than 3 transactions through ATMs.
"Customers are being duped and looted to make up for the losses of banks due to big industrialists not repaying loans taken by them," Nirupam said.
"PM Modi is very active on twitter and we thus wanted him to hear the plea of the common man who suffers on a daily basis due to the unjust practices of the banks. We have got tremendous response. We hope this plea does not go unanswered," Nirupam said.
