With the Election Commission announcing the biennial polls for three Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant from Kerala, among a total of 13 from six states, Congress, the lead partner in ruling UDF in the state and JD(U) will contest one seat each.
"As per the agreement in the Front, Congress and JD(U) will contest one seat each. Adecision in this regard was taken after holding talks with Front leaders," Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters after a cabinet meeting.
Asked who would be the Congress candidate, he said the high command would take a decision on it.
As per the present strength in the assembly, UDF can win two seats and the Opposition LDF one.
The EC had said that while the notification would be issued on March 4, the elections would be held on March 21. Counting of votes would take place the same day, if necessary.
The seats fell vacant due to retirement of Congress leader and former Defence Minister A K Antony and two other CPI(M) Rajya Sabha members, T N Seema and K N Balagopal.
