The bye-election was necessitated due to the resignation of sitting member Hussain Dalwai who was elected to the Rajya Sabha last year.
Today was the last date for filing nomination papers and Shiv Sena did not put up any candidate against him.
The 289-member legislative assembly formed the electoral college for the bye-election.
Muzaffar Hussain will get a tenure until April 2016.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, state Congress chief Manikrao Thakre and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders were present on the occasion.
Muzaffar will be formally declared elected after the last date for withdrawal of papers on February 6.
