The ruling Congress in Meghalaya today suffered a jolt when one of their elected members to the Garo tribal council joined the National People's Party, which is enjoying a majority in the state Assembly
Dhormonat Ch Sangma, who was elected on a Congress ticket from Naguapara constituency in West Garo Hills district and Devier M Sangma, an Independent MDC from Gasuapara constituency in South Garo Hills, joined the National People's Party (NPP).
Both had conveyed their allegiance to the NPP through their letters addressed to Conrad K Sangma, MP and national president of the NPP and also submitted letters of unconditional and irrevocable support to the Garo Hills Progressive Alliance, an alliance led by the NPP at the GHADC.
"The NPP is happy to welcome Dhormonat and Devier to the party and the ruling GHPA, with the firm belief that their joining the NPP will usher in growth and stability to the Garo Hills," party spokesperson James K Sangma said.
The NPP, which won ten of the 29 seats, has increased the number of MDCs to 12 following the duo's joining them. It has the support of 18 of the 29 members in the GHADC.
