A Bench comprising justices K S Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra took on record the submissions of the Centre, Bihar Government and the report of the specially-constituted three-member AIIMS team which had visited Patna on October 21 to examine them.

While the Bihar Government said that it would abide by the directions of the court, the petitioner submitted that judiciary was the best instituion to balance the interests of the 15-year-old conjoined twins Saba and Farah Saleem.

The apex court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) petition by Aarushi Dhasmana, a second-year law student from Pune.

The petition filed through counsel Ravi Prakash Gupta had sought medical aid for the girls saying that the two grown up girls born as twins and joined at their heads are undergoing immense pain and are unable to sleep.

While seeking medical aid at government's expenditure, the PIL had said if it is not possible, the parents be permitted to undertake "mercy killing" of the twins.

The panel comprising professors M V Padma (Neurology), A Chaturvedi (Neuroanaesthesia) and S S Kale (Neurosurgery) said investigations have their own risks and "the parents and the brother are not willing to take any risk including the risks involved in investigations." MORE
