The Delhi High Court today asked the Centre to consider enhancing the salaries of Delhi police personnel to bring them at par with the Chandigarh Police.
A bench of justices G S Sistani and I S Mehta told the Ministry of Home Affairs to consider Delhi police constable Babu Lal Mitharwal plea for 'equal pay for equal work' as a representation and take a decision on it within three months.
With the direction, the court disposed of the plea of Mitharwal, who had contended that Chandigarh Police personnel were being paid more salary despite undertaking similar duties.
He had said that police constables in Delhi and Chandigarh hold identical posts under the same cadre controlling authority with similar responsibilities.
While the salaries of constables of Delhi Police fell in the pay band of Rs 5,200-20,200 and grade of Rs 2,000, their counterparts in Chandigarh Police got Rs 10,300-34,800 and a grade pay of Rs 3,200, his plea had said.
The petition had also said the basic qualification, method of recruitment and level of physical standards being the same for both forces, there can be no discrimination.
It had claimed that the nature of the job of Delhi Police was much more arduous as compared to Chandigarh Police owing to the enhanced risks in discharge of duties.
The constable had moved the high court after the Central Administrative Tribunal had turned down his plea.
