The Madras High Court today directed the special committee formed to conduct the March 28 elections to the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (BCTP) to consider making available NOTA option for the voters.
The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose gave the direction while closing a PIL by advocate Aramugam, who wanted the NOTA (None-Of-The-Above) option for the polls.
The petitioner contended that in a democratic country every eligible voter has a right to vote and also have a right not to vote for any candidate (NOTA) in the Parliament and Assembly polls as provided under Representation of Peoples Act.
He contended that the Act has set a precedent for other bodies/councils elections to be held in a free and fair manner.
