Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta today urged the Chief Minister to immediately constitute a "Street Vendors Welfare Board" to rehabilitate five lakh small-time vendors who are earning their livelihood by selling goods and services in the national capital.
In a letter to Arvind Kejriwal, Gupta advised him that state government should file petition in the Delhi High Court or the Supreme Court to protect livelihood means of the street vendors.
Delhi Government has brought notification of Delhi Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Scheme, 2015, which will ultimately prove "disastrous" to the vendors, he said.
Gupta has urged Kejriwal to constitute a "Street Vendors Welfare Board" to rehabilitate five lakh small-time vendors working in Delhi.
"It appears that the Government has over ruled its own manifesto providing protection to street vendors and taken steps which will ultimately prove to be disastrous to them," he said.
Gupta reminded the Chief Minister that "he had promised during the election that if elected, his Government would bring within three months a legislation to provide complete protection to street vendors to enable them earn their livelihood with respect and dignity."
The latest notification issued by the Kejriwal Government forbids cooking by street vendors on roadsides and heavy fine against violations, which will badly hit them and their customers, he added.
